Description
This impressive slow growing palm is distinguished by its wine bottle shaped trunk.
Endemic to Chile, there are over 100,000 specimens growing on steep ravines at high altitude.
Mature trunks yield syrup, sometimes harvested locally to make palm wine or treacle.
The seeds are edible too, with the appearance and taste of mini coconuts.
Jubaea will thrive in locations that have mild winters and cool dry summers.
It can tolerate temperature dips down to -15°C (5°F). It dislikes hot and humid climates.
Seeds can take between 1 and 6 months to sprout at germination temperature of 30°C (86°F).
