Description
The Barrel cactus is native to the Southwest Desert of North America.
It is quite easy to cultivate and will grow relatively quickly for a cactus.
After several years, yellow or orange blooms will appear, usually in April, though late blooming is possible.
The flowers later turn orange and wilt away to reveal small pineapple-shaped fruits.
The fruits are bitter and not appealing to eat.
The sharp needle-like spikes can be dangerous to people and animals, so location is important to consider when growing these.
